Learning to Learn

Identifying a Community Problem and Designing a Solution

Turning learning into service

Community service-learning is a structured way to use your skills and knowledge to help solve a real problem near you, while learning at the same time. It follows clear milestones. The first two are identifying a problem and designing a solution.

Milestone 1 — identify a problem. Look carefully at your community. Talk to residents, observe daily life, and notice what causes difficulty. Problems often appear in areas such as health, clean water, sanitation, the environment, safety and education. A good problem is real, important and something learners can realistically help with.

Milestone 2 — design a solution. First brainstorm many possible ideas without judging them. Then choose the most practical one and design how it will work, step by step. Finally, share it and collect feedback from teachers, peers and community members. Feedback exposes weaknesses early so you can improve the plan before spending time and resources.

Kenyan context: A Grade 9 class in Machakos noticed that rubbish was clogging a drainage channel and breeding mosquitoes. Their solution — organising clean-up days and placing labelled bins — came from observing the problem, brainstorming, and refining the idea after the chief and residents gave feedback.
