You are not alone on the journey

A pre-career support system is the network of people and resources that helps a learner grow, plan and prepare for future work. Good support builds you up in every area — academically, socially, emotionally and morally — which is called holistic development.

Common support systems in a school community include:

Guidance and counselling teachers who help with personal and career decisions.

Mentors — experienced people who advise and inspire learners.

Peer support — classmates studying and encouraging one another.

Career talks and exhibitions that introduce different professions.

Libraries and digital resources for research about careers.

Sometimes challenges arise: a learner may feel shy to ask for help, advice may conflict, or a school may have few resources. Solutions include building confidence to speak up, choosing trustworthy advisers, forming study groups, and sharing the resources that exist.

Kenyan context: Many Kenyan schools hold an annual Career Day where professionals — a doctor, a pilot, an accountant from a Nairobi firm — talk to learners. Attending and asking honest questions is one of the smartest ways to use your support system.
