Hindu Values and Ethics in Daily Life

Hindu Values and Ethics in Daily Life

Hindu ethics turn belief into everyday behaviour. Several values stand out:

Satya (truthfulness): living and speaking honestly.

Ahimsa (non-violence): avoiding harm to people, animals and nature.

Dama (self-control): mastering harmful urges and staying focused.

Seva (selfless service): helping others without expecting reward.

Respect for elders, teachers and guests, captured in the idea that 'the guest is like the divine'.

These values are not only ideas to memorise; they are habits to practise. A person of good character is patient, honest, kind and disciplined, and treats every living being with care.

Kenyan context: Hindu values blend beautifully with the Kenyan spirit of harambee (pulling together) and ujamaa (community). A Grade 9 learner who practises seva might volunteer to clean a local stream or help a younger pupil with homework, expecting no payment, only the good of doing right. Truthfulness in a group project means giving credit honestly to every member.
