[0:00] The oldest and most respected Hindu scriptures are the Vedas. The word Veda means knowledge, and these texts are seen as a great store of spiritual wisdom. [0:50] There are four Vedas: the Rig Veda, the Yajur Veda, the Sama Veda and the Atharva Veda. The Rig Veda is the oldest and contains many hymns of praise. [1:45] For a very long time the Vedas were passed on by careful memorisation and oral recitation before they were written down, showing the value Hindus placed on accuracy. [2:35] The Upanishads come at the end of the Vedic tradition. They move from rituals toward deeper questions: What is the soul? What is the Supreme Reality? How are they related? [3:25] A famous teaching of the Upanishads is that the Atman within and the Brahman beyond are ultimately one, a profound idea of unity. [4:10] Remember: the Vedas are the foundation, and the Upanishads explore the deeper meaning. Together they shape Hindu thought to this day.
