The Vedas and Upanishads: Foundations of Hindu Wisdom

The Vedas and Upanishads

The Vedas are the oldest Hindu scriptures. The Sanskrit word
veda
means knowledge. Hindus regard the Vedas as a vast store of spiritual insight, revealed to ancient sages who heard them in deep meditation.

There are four Vedas:

Rig Veda: the oldest, rich in hymns of praise.

Yajur Veda: focused on the formulas of worship and ritual.

Sama Veda: the Veda of melodies and chanting.

Atharva Veda: covering daily life, healing and practical wisdom.

For centuries the Vedas were preserved through precise oral recitation before being written down, a remarkable feat of memory. The Upanishads form the later, reflective part of the Vedic tradition. They turn from outward ritual to deep questions about the soul (Atman), the Supreme Reality (Brahman), and the goal of life.

Kenyan context: Just as Kenyan communities once preserved proverbs, genealogies and history through oral storytelling by elders around the fire, the Vedas were guarded by careful memorisation for generations. A Grade 9 learner can appreciate both traditions as proof that knowledge worth keeping is worth protecting.
