[0:00] Welcome. Today we study Ulum al-Quran, which means the sciences of the Quran, the branches of knowledge that help us understand the Holy Book correctly.
[0:35] The Quran was revealed to Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, gradually over about twenty-three years, beginning in the cave of Hira near Makkah.
[1:20] These sciences include knowing the Makkan and Madinan revelations, the reasons behind verses called Asbab al-Nuzul, and the rules of correct recitation known as Tajwid.
[2:10] After the Prophet's death, the verses were carefully collected and arranged. During the time of Caliph Uthman a standard written copy, the Mushaf, was prepared and copies were sent across the Muslim world.
[3:05] Studying these sciences protects the Quran from error and helps every reader recite and understand it as it was first revealed.
