[0:00] Today we explore work and vocation, and why Christianity treats honest work as a good and dignified part of life.
[0:40] Work is any effort, physical or mental, done to produce goods or services. A vocation is a calling, a sense that one is meant to do a particular kind of work.
[1:25] A profession needs special training, such as nursing or teaching. A trade or craft involves a practical skill, like masonry or tailoring. A career is the path of jobs a person follows over time.
[2:15] The Bible presents God Himself as a worker in creation, and teaches that those who can work should not be idle but should provide for themselves and help others.
[3:05] Traditional African societies also valued work highly. Members of the community were expected to contribute through farming, herding, building, and caring for one another.
[3:50] Christians teach that employers must pay fair wages and treat workers justly, while employees must be honest and diligent. Child labour and exploitation are condemned.
