<h3>Understanding Work and Vocation</h3><p>Work is any honest effort, using the body or the mind, to produce goods or services that meet human needs. Christianity teaches that work is <strong>good and dignified</strong>. In Genesis, God is shown working as He creates, and human beings are given the task of tending the world. Honest labour is therefore part of God's design, not a punishment.</p><p>Several related words describe how people work:</p><ul><li><strong>Vocation</strong> — a calling; a deep sense that one is meant to do a particular kind of service.</li><li><strong>Profession</strong> — work that requires formal training and qualifications, such as teaching, medicine, or law.</li><li><strong>Trade or craft</strong> — work built on a practical skill, such as carpentry, tailoring, or welding.</li><li><strong>Career</strong> — the overall journey of jobs and growth a person follows through life.</li></ul><p>Christian teaching says those who are able should work to provide for themselves and to share with the needy. Idleness and dishonest gain are discouraged. <strong>Employers</strong> are expected to pay fair wages, provide safe conditions, and treat workers with respect. <strong>Employees</strong> are expected to be honest, punctual, and diligent. <strong>Child labour</strong>, which denies children education and harms their health, is firmly condemned, as is any exploitation of workers.</p><div class="callout"><strong>Kenyan context:</strong> Think of a young person in Nairobi choosing between training as a plumber (a trade), studying nursing at college (a profession), or running a small M-Pesa and grocery shop (self-employment). Each path is honourable when done honestly. A matatu sacco that pays drivers fairly and refuses to employ school-age children is applying Christian and traditional African values about work.</div>
