[0:00] Some germs survive normal washing. Disinfecting goes further by killing the germs left on surfaces and clothing. [0:40] Cleaning removes dirt, sanitising lowers germs to a safe level, and disinfecting kills most germs using chemicals or heat. [1:20] Clothing of a sick person can be disinfected by boiling, soaking in a safe disinfectant, then drying in bright sunlight. [2:05] Household articles and farm tools are washed, then wiped or soaked in a disinfectant such as a diluted bleach solution. [2:45] On poultry and dairy farms, disinfecting equipment and footbaths stops diseases spreading between animals. [3:25] Used correctly, disinfectants protect health, but they must be handled carefully and kept away from children and food.
