[0:00] During the rains, grass grows faster than animals can eat it. During the dry season, there is almost nothing. Conserving feed bridges that gap.
[0:40] Hay is grass cut while green, then dried in the sun until the moisture is low, and stored under a roof so it does not rot.
[1:25] Silage is green fodder packed tightly into a pit or drum, sealed from air, where it ferments and keeps for months.
[2:10] Conserving feed means a dairy cow in Kiambu can still give milk in January when pastures are brown.
[2:55] At home we also reduce food loss: cooling and covering leftovers, refrigerating where possible, and feeding safe scraps to chickens or compost.
[3:35] Less waste means more value from the same harvest and less money lost by the family.
