[0:00] Soil takes hundreds of years to form but can wash away in a single rainy season. That is why we protect it.
[0:35] When rain hits bare ground on a slope, it carries away the top layer where most plant food is found. This is called soil erosion.
[1:15] On hilly farms in places like Murang'a or Kisii, farmers dig terraces and trenches that slow the water and hold the soil in place.
[2:00] Cover crops, mulching with dry grass, and planting along the contour all reduce both erosion and water loss.
[2:45] Grass strips and trees such as Grevillea on the edges of plots act like a comb, trapping soil and letting clean water soak in.
[3:25] Conserving soil and water means more harvests, cleaner rivers, and a farm that still feeds the family in dry years.
