Plants are producers; they make their own food through photosynthesis using sunlight, water, and carbon dioxide. Animals are consumers; they get energy by eating other organisms. This is called nutrition.
▸ Photosynthesis — The process used by plants, algae and cyanobacteria to convert light energy into chemical energy, through a process that uses sunlight, water and carbon dioxide.
Example: Plants making glucose from sunlight and CO₂.
Animals have different modes of nutrition. Herbivores eat plants, carnivores eat other animals, and omnivores eat both. The process of breaking down food into nutrients the body can use is called digestion.
