[0:00] Green plants make their own food in a process called photosynthesis. Because they make food for themselves, they are called autotrophs.
[0:45] Photosynthesis needs two raw materials, water and carbon dioxide, and two conditions, light energy and the green pigment chlorophyll.
[1:30] In the light stage, sunlight splits water to release oxygen, and energy is captured as a molecule called ATP.
[2:20] In the dark stage, carbon dioxide is combined with hydrogen to build a sugar called glucose, which the plant stores or uses for energy.
[3:10] The overall word equation is: carbon dioxide plus water, using light and chlorophyll, gives glucose plus oxygen.
