[0:00] Matter can be sorted into pure substances and mixtures. Pure substances are either elements or compounds.
[0:40] An element is made of only one kind of atom, like copper or oxygen, and it cannot be broken down by chemical means.
[1:25] A compound forms when two or more elements join chemically in a fixed ratio, like water, which is hydrogen joined to oxygen.
[2:10] A mixture contains two or more substances physically combined but not chemically joined, so the parts can be separated again.
[3:00] An alloy is a special mixture made by combining a metal with one or more other elements to improve its strength, hardness or resistance to rust.
