Welcome to our first lesson on Citizenship! Today, we'll focus on listening to speeches and understanding their message. Remember, listening is an active mental process, not just hearing sound. It involves understanding, evaluating, and responding.
▸ Fact vs. Opinion — A fact is a statement that can be proven true or false, often supported by evidence. An opinion is a personal viewpoint or belief.
Example: Fact: 'Kenya has 47 counties.' Opinion: 'Kenya's devolution system is the best in Africa.'
When listening to a speech, pay attention to the speaker's purpose. Are they trying to inform you, persuade you, or entertain you? Also, note the tone of the speech – is it passionate, authoritative, or urgent?
We will now listen to a speech by a County Governor. As you listen, use the T-Chart strategy: one column for main points, and the other for your questions and reactions.
