[0:00] Every word in English belongs to a group called a part of speech. Knowing these groups helps you build correct, clear sentences. [0:40] Nouns name people, places, animals or things, like 'Nairobi', 'teacher' and 'maize'. Pronouns replace nouns, like 'he', 'she', 'it' and 'they'. [1:25] Verbs show action or being, like 'run', 'cook' and 'is'. Adjectives describe nouns, like 'tall' building or 'sweet' mango. [2:15] Adverbs describe verbs, adjectives or other adverbs, often ending in '-ly', like 'quickly'. Prepositions show position, like 'on', 'under' and 'between'. [3:05] Conjunctions join words or ideas, like 'and', 'but' and 'because'. Interjections show sudden feeling, like 'Wow!' or 'Ouch!'. Together these eight classes build every sentence.
