[0:00] A formal letter is an official letter written to someone you do not know personally, like a head teacher, a manager or a county official. [0:45] It has a fixed layout: your address and the date at the top right, then the receiver's address on the left, then a salutation such as 'Dear Sir or Madam'. [1:35] Add a clear subject line in capitals or underlined, so the reader sees at a glance what the letter is about. [2:25] Keep the body short and polite: one paragraph to introduce your purpose, one or two to give details, and one to state what you want to happen. [3:15] Close with 'Yours faithfully' when you began with 'Dear Sir or Madam', leave space for your signature, then write your full name. Always proofread before sending.

Plays from this package with no internet. Subtitles are on; the 🔊 Listen button also reads the lesson aloud.
