[0:00] Strong readers do not read every passage the same way. They choose a strategy that fits their purpose, just as a mechanic chooses the right spanner for the job.
[0:40] Skimming means reading quickly to get the general idea. Your eyes glide over titles, first lines and key words to learn what a text is about.
[1:25] Scanning means hunting for one specific piece of information, like searching a bus timetable for the 7am departure to Kisumu without reading every line.
[2:10] Inference means reading between the lines. If a character shivers and rubs her arms, the writer is showing, not telling, that she is cold.
[3:00] After reading, ask yourself: what is the main idea, and what details support it? Answering this turns reading into real understanding.
